Planning the day
Hohensalzburg and the old town: a day itinerary
The fortress is a half-day on its own — here's how it fits around the rest of Salzburg's old town.
Check dates on Viator ↗Start early at the fortress
Take an early funicular, or the footpath if you'd rather walk up before the crowds build. The Golden Hall, the Princes' Chambers, the Salzburg Bull and the ramparts realistically take two to three hours without rushing.
Down into Kapitelplatz
The funicular, or the footpath, puts you back at Festungsgasse, a few steps from Kapitelplatz and Salzburg Cathedral. It's the natural hinge between a fortress morning and an old-town afternoon.
The old town on foot
From Kapitelplatz, the cathedral quarter and the shopping streets of the old town stretch out in every direction — easily filled with a few hours without needing any transport.
An evening option
For a different kind of evening inside the fortress itself, Viator lists a dinner-and-concert evening held in the historic halls after the day's visitors have left — worth considering if you're building a full day around the Festungsberg rather than just a morning visit.
