Getting there
How to get to Hohensalzburg Fortress
The funicular takes a minute. The footpath takes thirty. Here's what each one actually involves.

The Festungsbahn funicular's valley station is at Festungsgasse 4, just off Kapitelplatz behind Salzburg Cathedral. Cars carry up to 55 people and run about every ten minutes; the ride takes 54 seconds. It has run since 1892 — on water ballast until 1959, with an electric drive since 1960 — and its operator describes it as Austria's oldest funicular still in service.
The footpath, if you'd rather walk
The footpath starts on Festungsgasse by Kapitelplatz and climbs to the fortress gates. Allow about thirty minutes at an unhurried pace. The fortress describes it as not barrier-free: steep sections and steps make it unsuitable for strollers, and it is awkward with heavy luggage.
From Salzburg Hauptbahnhof
The old town is about a twenty-minute walk from the main station. Faster: lines 1, 3, 5, 6 or 25 to Rathaus or Ferdinand-Hanusch-Platz, then about five minutes on foot through the old town to Festungsgasse.
Parking, if you're driving
The old town itself is pedestrian-only. Park and ride sites at Messezentrum and Alpenstraße sit on the city's edge, with garages closer in at Mönchsberg and Nonntal for those who want to walk the last stretch.
Which one to pick
The funicular is the easier choice for most visitors, especially with children, a stroller or limited time — and the steep ride up the Festungsberg is part of the visit. The footpath suits anyone who wants the climb, or who is visiting while the funicular is closed for scheduled maintenance; the fortress posts exact dates on its own site.
